JOB: SOCIAL MEDIA APRIL FOOLS CAMPAIGN
In April 2023, the agency I worked for decided to pull off a bold April Fools’ prank for Vimto, one that turned a common mispronunciation into a clever marketing flex. The idea? Tell everyone that Vimto was rebranding itself as ‘Vimpto’—because, let’s be honest, that’s how everyone says it.
It was my job to write the typography on the fake billboard as well as unveil the news on the brand’s social media posts. What seemed fairly innocuous at the time ended up growing into a big purple monster that needed to be tamed!
This single organic post went viral, reaching over 2.8m people on Meta alone. It sparked major shares on social media, and even caught the attention of media outlets like LadBible and The Sun.
Due to the overwhelming engagement and how convincingly believable the prank became, the brand eventually had to remove the post. Fortunately, the noise it generated meant the campaign was considered a fruitful success for Vimto. We also had fun spinning the story, pretending it was all a mistake by a naive intern.
